The key to survival for the United Methodist Church is finding a heart for the unchurched in the communities surrounding its congregations, said Rev. Adam Hamilton during the last part of his keynote messages at the 2008 Annual Conference in Salina.
At the 2008 commissioning and ordination service, Bishop Scott Jones referred to a book by Wes Seeliger that used analogies with settlers and pioneers. Pioneer Christians are risk-takers; settlers maintain the church.
“We are a world of hope in a world of hurt” was the theme of Dixie Brewster’s message during Opening Worship that began the 2008 Kansas West Annual Conference in Salina. Brewster called on the conference to grasp onto Christian hope.
Chapman UMC pastor Rev. Ken Trickle and his wife, Mary Ann, huddled in their living room when the June 11 tornado hit their house. The brick chimney collapsed about two feet from them.
“You’re probably not the only church in your community," Rev. Adam Hamilton said at the 2008 Kansas West Annual Conference. He said if people don’t get anything out of the church service, they won’t come back.
The number one difference between thriving and struggling churches is leadership, said Rev. Adam Hamilton at the 2008 Kansas West Annual Conference. Hamilton said there are four essential tasks of a leader.
